What is War?

War is not the syllables of rifles

Which knock the heart out.

It is not the echoes of bombs

Which put the thought in doubt.

It is not the missing mothers and sisters

The departed fathers and brothers

The footsteps withdrawn from family globes.

It is not the hungry dishes and calabashes

The lack of smile on the faces of children.

War is the lack of the soft verses

Which hold heart and body together.

It is the absence of the tender utterances

Which pattern the worth of the soul.

War is the illness which chews peace to pieces.
